DATE AT GRAND NO PENALTY FOR COMEDIAN LES
Comedian Les Dawson thoroughly enjoyed being tackled by a dozen members of a new ladies’ soccer team from Bilston.
The sports-mad personality met them this week on stage at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre, where he is appearing in pantomime.
Striker Maureen “Mighty Me” Mullen, pictured centre from the Bilston United Ladies’ team, certainly scored a hit with Les.
The club has set up the Bilston United Women’s League for ladies teams in the Midlands and kicks off its fixtures list on May 2.
League secretary Mrs Janet Bristow said: “We have had a keep-fit team at the club for ages and then the ladies said they’d love to play football. Now it seems I’m the only keep-fitter left!”
The club has 16 women players so far and it is pleased to have two five-a-side teams – when another goalkeeper can be found.
“Our nearest women’s league was in Nottingham so we decided to set up our own. The Women’s FA is delighted,” Janet added.
