Jacky and Danny, two Brummie lads, lead ordinary and unexciting lives. In 1914, with the threat of war rumbling around Europe, Jacky thinks enlisting is the chance to get away from their humdrum existence. He talks Danny into joining up with him and although under age they enlist in one of Birmingham’s ‘pals battalions’.
Danny’s parents are horrified but he persuades them to let him go by promising his Dad that he’ll win a medal for his Mum. The lads experience the full horrors of war, tempered only by the comradeship of the men they serve with and their love for their families. Don Maclean and Malcolm Stent lead a cast of thirteen in this play, which features original songs and songs from the trenches.
